Inspiring you to celebrate Western Australia

I am often asked what my favorite photograph is - especially when it comes to my aerial work. It’s a question that leaves me pondering, because I never really know how to answer it. I do not have just one favorite. Each image speaks to me differently, depending on the colours, the shapes, the textures, and the way everything flows together. I am drawn to curves as the way the land feels almost human from above, like a body tracing lines and drawing shapes above the earth. Something ethereal, timeless, and eternal starts to emerge.

That feeling came to me in 2017 when I flew above the mudflats of Derby in the Kimberley. I was filled with a deep sense of awe as the vast expanse of land revealed itself below. Mangrove-lined rivers and channels appeared like great snaking branches and intricate tendrils. It felt like witnessing an ancient tableau of land, sea, and sky; one that has been quietly forming for millions of years.

Paola Anselmi - Curator and Arts writer - wrote the foreword of my book called " Beyond - Above Western Australia":  “.....The ever-changing mood of the landscape, it’s vastness, the mutable topographical features revealed by the change of seasons and microclimates, the evanescence of colour and light, the dulcet movement of sands and water, the ebbs and flows of the landmass, fragmented and jarring textures coming together in perfect harmony... Australia can be an unforgiving country that confronts the newcomer to accept its remote beauty on its own terms.

Beneath the surface veneer of the descriptive barren monotony frequently used to describe the Australian bush, Perret reveals a beautifully contrasting and coexisting reality. Her photographs document an almost clandestine vision of Western Australia, imperceptible from the ground, hidden from the majority of us who rarely venture beyond.....”

While this year has been full of exciting projects and exhibitions in Western Australia , as well as exhibitions and video work presented at Origin Cinema and at the Centre Culturel Tjibaou in New Caledonia, I am very much looking forward to what 2026 will bring, with more exciting news on the way.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported my work over the past 12 years living in Western Australia. Your encouragement means so much.

Until then, I wish you a very happy Christmas filled with love, and a beautiful, meaningful New Year.
